Equipment

  • 1 Saucepan or pot

Ingredients

  • 1 tsp dried licorice root or a small piece of fresh licorice root, thinly sliced
  • 2 cups Water
  • A slice of lemon or a few fresh mint leaves for added flavor optional
  • Honey or another sweetener, to taste optional

Instructions

  • If using fresh licorice root, clean it thoroughly and slice it thinly. Dried licorice root is typically pre-sliced or in small chunks.
  • In a saucepan, bring 2 cups of water to a rolling boil.
  • Add the licorice root to the boiling water. Reduce the heat to a simmer.
  • Let the licorice root simmer in the water for about 8-10 minutes. The longer you simmer, the stronger the flavor will be.
  • Remove the pan from heat. Strain the tea into cups, removing the licorice root pieces.
  • Add a slice of lemon or a few fresh mint leaves to each cup for extra flavor. Sweeten with honey or your preferred sweetener if desired.
  • Sip your licorice root tea and enjoy its sweet, slightly earthy flavor.

Notes

Licorice root tea itself is virtually calorie-free. However, if you add sweeteners like honey, this will increase the calorie content. For example:
  • Without sweeteners: Approximately 0-5 calories per cup.
  • With 1 teaspoon of honey: Add approximately 20-25 calories per cup.
Licorice root tea is naturally sweet, so you may find that you don't need additional sweeteners. As a note, licorice root has a very distinct taste and can be quite potent, so adjust the amount used according to your preference. Also, if you have hypertension or certain other health conditions, it's a good idea to consult with a healthcare provider before consuming licorice root tea regularly.
